  4.     RISKY READING. When the vacationing George Bush was not
  5. busy not catching fish (his staff refers to his futile outings
  6. as "boating trips"), he was sailing through Tom Clancy's
  7. techno-thriller, Clear and Present Danger. The President
  8. recommended the novel -- about a covert U.S. operation against
  9. the Colombian drug lords -- to White House staffers. Since the
  10. villain turns out to be the National Security Adviser,
  11. colleagues joked to Brent Scowcroft that "maybe the President
  12. is trying to tell us something."

  14.     BEIRUT BUNKER. State Department veterans are appalled by
  15. Secretary James Baker's refusal to withdraw two dozen diplomats
  16. from Beirut, where they spend much time in underground shelters
  17. avoiding shells. Some officials want the Americans relocated to
  18. Cyprus, but Baker sees this as a retreat. Complains one
  19. diplomat: "We seem to be waiting for a sacrificial lamb. If one
  20. of our people dies, the rest will be taken out immediately."

  22.     TAPS FOR MIA'S. Officially, 2,338 U.S. servicemen are still
  23. missing in Southeast Asia, but retired General John Vessey, who
  24. has completed an investigation, is not optimistic. Hanoi has
  25. returned the remains of 227 Americans since 1987, and, despite
  26. numerous purported "live sightings," Vessey believes there is
  27. no credible evidence that any MIA is still alive.
